Rolls MX34C Overview
The two channel MX34C LiveMix by Rolls is a portable microphone mixer suitable for mixing two microphones and any stereo line-level source such as an iPod, CD player, or karaoke machine. The level and pan knobs on each phantom powered XLR input allows for sufficient control over volume and placement of audio as it's heard through a connected pair of speakers. Also, separate headphone circuitry makes monitoring the mix easy without ever affecting the overall main output.
Designed originally with video camera operators in mind, the MX34C is meant to be used anywhere with its convenient shoulder strap loops and 9 volt battery or AC adapter operation. Portable Solution
I bought this so I could mix a couple of pro mics with a laptop for Karaoke into a TV surround system. It makes a portable Karaoke when we visit family.
Excellent product for low cost
I use it with my DSLR camera and work very well.
Didn't meet my needs or expectations
I really wanted to like the MX34c because it appeared to have several things going for it: good build quality, lots of features, and a really reasonable price. But, if you're like me, you probably want to buy a unit like this so you can use the generally quieter and higher quality XLR balanced microphones on your device that accepts only unbalanced 1/8 inputs in order to improve sound quality and lower the noise floor. So, imagine how disappointed I was that noise hiss was actually greater when using this unit than without it. The electronics in this unit are way too noisy. Even the level controls made an obvious swishing noise when the level was changed. And the AC adapter when plugged in added it's own 60hz hum. And, whatever you do, don't make the mistake of unplugging a mic or turning the unit off with the headphones at normal listening level. If you do you'll get an ear-splitting click in your phones that you won't soon forget. I tried during several hours of intensive testing with several different mics and recording devices to find the sweet spot for this unit, but there just wasn't one. I had to send it back. Bottom line: there's a good reason that most people buy active XLR adapters in the $300-$500 price range and not one like this that's closer to $100.

I wanted to like the Rolls 34c because it appears to have nice build quality, abundant features, made in the U.S. and is certainly priced right. But, for me, it didn't meet my professional standards because it was way, way too noisy. It added significant hiss to the audio signal and with very little gain. Even the smooth feeling pots added swish-swish noise when changing level, something I had never heard before on a new device. Plug in the included AC adapter and you'll add some 60hz hum to the hiss. And if you happen to plug or unplug a microphone or turn the unit off with your headphones on you'll get an ear-splitting click that will make your ears ring for a few minutes. Overall, it's cheap and that's the way it sounds.

Does what it's intended to
Useful little 'Swiss Army Knife'. Adds a fair amount of gain; and regarding self-noise...don't expect Sound Devices quality, but it doesn't cost just short of a grand either; as a comparison it isn't really any noisier than a Mackie VLZ Pro mixer. Overall a decent and versatile little mixer for the price, does what it is intended to and works fine with my Rode NTG-2. I recommend reading the specs to know what you're getting.
My own fault
Well, I thought, since Canon added the Manual Volume Control to the 7d, I could save some Money by buying this cheap Phantom Power Mixer instead of the Beachtek DSLR. What I didn't realize is the fact that it only Outputs 18Volt Phantom Power and not 48 Volt, witch is sadly needed for the Rode NTG2. So, at least I could Power the NTG2 with a Batterie and Use this Mixer to control Volume and Pre-listen over the Headphone Jack. I researched and found, that some other Microphones are running with less Phantom Power. So for everybody how needs 48 Volt, forget it. If you just need less, go for it. The Sound Quality is not that Bad.
