The Story

Tilta GSS-T01-BCB Overview

Enjoy more camera choice and flexibility with the Tilta Float System Bottom Counterweight Bracket for the Tilta Float stabilizing system. This easy-to-use counterweight accessory expands the capabilities of your Float system to enable using small cameras and camcorders that are powered by DV-style batteries. The bracket mounts on the bottom of your stabilizer, in place of the V-mount or Gold mount battery plater, and it includes six 7.7 oz weights that let you fine-tune your stabilizer's balance when using small cameras or camcorders that power with internal batteries.

The bracket attaches to the bottom of the Float stabilizer via its NATO rail. The included counterweights mount on a center spindle and can rotate on the spindle for fine balance adjustment.

    The redesign is terrible

Tilta redesigned the pendulum counterweight and it has a few major issues that make it nearly unusable. 1 - NOT FOR USE WITH BATTERY PLATES: It's clear the new pendulum is considered an alternative to batteries rather than an addition. You cannot easily connect this to the V-Mount battery plate provided on the Tilta Float. It would be inexpensive to include the small slide clamp connector that would make this possible, but Tilta doesn't and to my knowledge you cannot purchase it separately. A pendulum weight is very useful on a system like the Tilta float, so this is a strange lack of foresight on Tilta's part. 2 - POOR BALANCING: If you plan to use this instead of a battery plate know that you can only adjust the balance on a single axis, not on both front/back and right/left like you can on the battery plates. This makes it very hard, if not impossible to achieve a perfect balance on some, admittedly less common, camera/gimble setups. Again, if Tilta provided the clamp instead of the slide, you could connect this to the multi-directional slide already provided in the Float system. 3 - MAJOR DESIGN ERROR. Because Tilta created a push release mechanism for the pendulum (which serves no necessary purpose in my mind) there is a inch play between the pendulum and the walls that hold it. This means that the pendulum is constantly sliding from side to side changing your center of balance. This continuously throws off the balance of the Tilta float and subsequently affects the positioning of the gimble attached to it. In theory, you may be able to fix this with three or four small washers but friction between the washers and the walls may create its own problems. There are so many workarounds and jerry rigs required to make this product work as intended that I would recommend not buying it unless you have to. I have many Tilta products, and they are all well designed and really solid. This product was clearly rushed to production to meet demand. I suspect they will redesign it again.

Jury is still out, but good starting point

I haven't had time to really work with this yet. I feel that it should have been included in the basic Float package, rather than as an option, as it is necessary to achieve dynamic balance. I see that some users on the facebook dji/tilta user group have been doing extensive modifications to fine-tune their rig.
