The Story

Rockland SC Overview

Rockland SelectaColor produces beautiful, brilliant color prints by the "photo-resist" method. No special darkroom equipment is required - only a halogen bulb is essential for exposure.

The colors are solid pigments for permanence, not fugitive dyes. Colors can be blended together, or applied in sequence for multicolor prints.

Making a Print
Handle SelectaColor under minimal room light, avoiding direct daylight or direct fluorescent light. A safelight is not necessary, but for longer periods of time, as when the sensitizer is drying, near or total darkness is recommended. Apply to any non-absorbent surface.

Absorbent materials like paper and wood should be pre-coated with lacquer or Krylon spray. Coat SelectaColor by brush or sponge. The coating should be adequate to cover but no thicker than necessary, as too thick a coating can limit light penetration.

Dry thoroughly in a darkened area under room temperature with circulating air from an electric fan. The coated material can be stored overnight before exposure. Longer storage may make development difficult.

Expose through a transparency held in contact by a glass plate. The transparency can be either high-contrast continuous-tone or black-line, and either negative or positive, depending on the desired effect.

As an alternative to transparencies, a solid object such as leaf, key, etc. can be be used to make a line-art "photogram." Exposure will be fastest - approximately 3 to 6 minutes at a distance of 2' - with a high-power halogen bulb. Sunlight is another useful exposure method. Other light sources may require a significantly longer exposure.

Develop by brushing or sponging gently with cool tap water to gradually dissolve the unexposed areas, revealing the image. Do not rush this step, as it may take several minutes for the image to appear. When the image is fully developed, blot and dry.

Note:
Ordinary household incandescent bulbs are impractical and necessitate long exposures and should NOT be used
Steps can be performed under diffuse room light - no safelight necessary
The process consists of just three steps
1. Brush on SelectaColor
2. Expose through a transparency
3. Develop with running water to reveal the brilliant positive image
